Standing high above the city, on Corcovado Mountain, is a truly enormous and famous statue called Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor in Portuguese). This giant statue of Jesus Christ stands with his arms open wide, as if embracing the whole city below.
Why is it a Wonder?
This statue is not only massive – it’s almost 125 feet tall (that’s like a 10-story building!) and weighs over 635 tons – but it’s also a powerful symbol of peace and welcome for Brazil. It was built using reinforced concrete and soapstone (which is soft and easy to carve!) and took nine years to complete, being finished in 1931.
